I guess in the current context both are considered same.

But traditionally texting means sending a SMS or Text Message where as chatting essentially means using a third party portal such as a Yahoo chat , Google chat ok web to send messages

Earlier when group texting was not available group chats were a big thing among teenagers which group texting replaced hence both are considered equivalent now.
