Answer:Around, 1750 English East India company gained political power in India. By this time, British no longer imported precious metal to buy Indian textiles, instead they collected taxes from peasants and zamindars. They gradually established factories over time and captured India. The British came to India in the 17th century as traders, conquered Bengal in 1757 in the battle of Plassey and then finally 100 years later, secured control of the entire subcontinent.

A lot of Indian rulers fought them bravely namely Marathas, Mysore Kingdom and the Sikhs. But they failed to secure allies and the British were masters in divide and rule. They also implemented policies such as the "Doctrine of Lapse" which forced the Indian kings to give up their kingdoms if they didn't have a true born son. Also, they put a policy called as divide and rule which helped capture numerous numbers        of kingdoms

In fact, the Mughals were a dead empire by then. The real challenge was always the Maratha Confederacy. Interesting point is, the Marathas lost the 3rd Battle of Panipat against the Afghans in 1761. This was due to poor diplomacy and a stretched army. If the Marathas had achieved a victory there, the order of the Peshwa was to march on the British in Bengal who had toppled Siraj-ud-Daula just 4 years ago. Had they been able to do that, the British would have been probably denied the opportunity to rule India.
