A fertilised egg contains an embryo, some food and a tiny bit of air. The tiny bit of air is not enough to keep the chick alive, however. But the egg is clever. The eggshell is not fully airtight, although it seems to be. This is because there are tiny holes in the shell, known as pores, through which the chick is able to breathe.
