The major cause of the uprising in 1857 was the fear among the people that the East India company wanted to convert Indians to Christianity. The Christian missionaries were very active at this time. As many natives converted to Christianity, these conversions were taken as proof of this fear. Further, a law passed in 1850 , allowed a Christian convert to inherit ancestral property. This lent further support to this mass fear. The belief that their religion was under threat United all sections of society against the British.
