Heavy smoke hangs over the Los Angeles Basin as firefighters struggle to control a forest fire.
Four hundred firefighters fought the blaze at the Angeles National Forest, California which began on Sunday.
One plane and six helicopters dumped chemicals and water on the fire in the picturesque San Gabriel Mountains.
The terrain is very steep, complicating the efforts of firefighters. Officials estimate it may take a week to control it.
The wildfire which has consumed 4,000 acres, forced the evacuation of hundreds of tourists camping over the holiday weekend which includes Labor Day, officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. In September 2009, one-fourth of the Angeles National Forest – 250 square miles or 650 square kilometres – were burned in a fire caused by arson.
