Cowasji Nanabhai Davar established the first Indian cotton mill, The Bombay Spinning Mill, in 1854 in Bombay. The primary advances came from families of the mill-owners, chiefly collected from trading activities. Later, when the profits in the form of shares were accessible to the people, much of the control still rested in the hands of Indians. This opened the way for more textile mills in India because with the help of the share more and more mill emerged and as the result 53 mills in the city in 1925, only 14 were British owned.
