Gaseous nitrogen is oxidised by combining with the oxygen in the atmosphere to form Nitric oxide during the discharge of lightning. Nitric oxide is further oxidised into nitrogen dioxide. The nitrogen dioxide dissolves in the atmospheric moisture or rainwater in the presence of oxygen to form nitic acid which gets washed down and combines with the salts present in the soil. This is how the atmospheric nitrogen is fixed into useful nitric compounds in the atmosphere.
