Take a drawing board and fix a white sheet of paper over it. In the middle of the paper draw a straight line along its length . Place a bar magnet along the line and draw its boundary. Place the board in north south direction . Plot the magnetic lines of force with the help of a plotting compass. This can be done by placing the magnetic compass at different points around the bar magnet starting from the north pole. It is found that the compass needle comes to rest in a direction other than the north south direction . The direction in which the needle points is marked by an arrow at each point . Joining the points gives the magnetic lines of force.
