Under the reign of Harshvardhan, the Nalanda University emerged as a great center of learning where pupils from distant places and foreign countries used to come for education and learning. King Harsha extended all possible assistance to Chancellor of the University, Acharya Shilabhadra and made Nalanda into a world famous university. The university had access to the revenues of 100 villages given to them by King Harsha for its upkeep and maintenance. The students received free education and liberal grants. Harsha took exhaustive steps to promote learning.
It was a center of advanced post graduate studies in various subjects. Foreign students from Korea, Japan, Mongolia, China, Tibet and Ceylone (Present day Sri Lanka) came to Nalanda for their higher studies. Hieun Tsang himself studied Yoga in Nalanda for long five years under the guidance of the Chancellor of the University Shilabhadra. During the period when Hieun Tsang studied there, Nalanda had 8500 students.
