Pune, an old and renowned city of Maharashtra, has spread and become bigger in the last two to three decades. Its growth has been largely due to industry, but housing has also made it expand into newer areas. While education has been its forte, so has industry not lagged far behind.

As a result of the growth, mentioned above, Pune has had a migrant population working in its industries as much as students coming from other states and cities to study here.

Due to the growth in industrialisation, rise in population and increased construction of housing facilities, the population has rapidly grown and the number of motor vehicles has gone up significantly. This has put pressure on the civic facilities, which have not been able to keep pace with the city's progress and resultant growth.

Earlier, there were more standalone houses or bungalows and gardening was practised around the city. This has yielded place to multi-storied buildings and less gardening.

The ecosystem has quite naturally changed as a consequence of the increase of population, rapid growth of high-rise buildings, significant growth in the number of motor vehicles and so on. Better town-planning may have helped in these matters.
