The shape if the earth is geoid, which is bulging in the middle and narrow at the poles. This makes the radius larger near the equator and smaller at the poles. For example, look at a ball, its shape is similar to that of earth. Because of its shape, its centre will have a greater radius and its ends will have a small radius.
