The small intestine has adaptive structures known as the villi. The villi are adapted in the following two ways:
1)The villi are one cell thick folding of the inner lumen of the small intestine. This thickness decreases the distance over which materials have to move to get into the blood stream when being absorbed.
2)The villi are highly folded which increases the surface area over which absorbed food materials are absorbed.
