The unification of Germany into a politically and administratively united country formally happened on 18 January 1871, in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles in France.
Princes of the German states, excluding Austria, assembled in the hall to declare Wilhelm I of Prussia as German Emperor after the French surrender in the Franco-Prussian War. Unification also exposed tensions due to theological, linguistic, political, and cultural differences among the citizens of the new nation.
However, the self-interests of the various parties opposed the manner for almost a century of autocratic experimentation, starting in the era of the Napoleonic Wars, which supported the liberation of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, and the consequent growth of German nationalism.
