Electronic configuration of C=6
1s^2,2s^2,2p^2 in ground state
At exited state
1s^2,2s^1,2p^3
The outer shell contains 4 unpaired electron so the valency is 4

the valency of carbon is 4 because there are 4
electrons in the outermost shell of carbon hence the balance electron of carbon are 4 that's why the valency of carbon atom is 4 .
