Applying tense is necessary both while writing and speaking. You have to take care of when should you use past present or future tense. For using these tenses, learning about them is a MUST. so what I suggest is, first know your tenses. Learn about what each tense is and when to use them. Once you get to know this, you'll automatically use them while speaking.
