we just have to see that the no. atoms on the reactants side are equal to the no. of atoms on the products side.

Here are the steps:
1) Take an equation:
H² + O² -----› H²O
2) See the number of atoms of the first element in the left, here it is H with two atoms.
3) See it's number on the right. It's sand so nothing to do.
4) Now see the number of O atoms on left, it is two but in the right side it's just one so add 2 before H²O.
H² + O² -------› 2H²O
5) But this changes the number of H on right so equalise it by putting the right number on left.
2H² + O² ------› 2H²O
Now it's balanced. Basically we just have to equalise the number of atoms on both the side.
