If u push a heavy box ehich is rest ,u must exert some force to start its motion. However once the box is sliding u apply a lesser force to maintain that motion ? Why?

Initially when you push a heavy box at rest you apply large force. This is because we have to overcome the force of friction along with the force by the box on us.
But after we overcome the force by friction, the only force that acts now is by the box and nothing else. So we are able to move the box by applying lesser amount of force
