Details of the calculation: When the capacitor is connected to the battery, the energy stored in the air-filled capacitor is U = ½ CV2, and the charge on each plate is q = CV. When the capacitor is filledwith the dielectric liquid, itscapacitance becomes kC, where k is the dielectric constant of the liquid.

  • The dielectric constant is therefore also known as the relative permittivity of the material.
  • Since the dielectric constant is just a ratio of two similar quantities, it is dimensionless.
