let the weight of salt be W

you have to know the total charge on the anion or cation of the salt

i.e if AX is the salt and it dissociates like

AX <-----> (A^n+) + (X^n-)

then the equivalent weight is W/n

for example Na2SO4:

mol wt = 142

Na2SO4 <-------> 2Na+ + SO4 2-

total charge on Na is 2x(+1) = 2

on SO4 is 1x(-2) = 2

therefore the equivalent weight is 142/2=71
