Proper way to find molecular mass...

Identify each element in the molecule:

In this case: molecule = CCl4

So we have, Carbon and Chlorine

Now,

Find the number of atoms of each element in the molecule:

In this case:

Number of atoms of Carbon = 1

Number of atoms of Chlorine = 4

Now, There will be given molar mass of each element present in the molecule, In other words then learn them.

Now,

We know

molar mass of Carbon = 12 g

molar mass of Chlorine = 35.5 g

Now, Multiply molar mass and number of atoms of each element, and add them:

==> molecular mass of CCl4 = ( molar mass of carbon × number of atoms of carbon in CCl4 ) + ( molar mass of Chlorine × number of atoms of Chlorine in CCl4 )

==> 12 × 1 + 35.5 × 4

==> 12 + 142

==> 154 g

Molecular mass of CCl4 is 154 g
