For the valencies of first twenty elements, the following two cases arise:
1)If the element has valence electrons 1,2 or 3 then valency=number of valence electrons.They lose electrons and hence are metals.
2)If the element has 4,5,6 or 7 valence electrons then valency=8 minus number of valence electrons. They gain electrons and are non metals or metalloids(if valency is 4).
3)The elements which have 8 electrons in their valence shell, they are stable and do not react.
They are noble elements.
