Conservation Science: Heritage Materialsattempts an overview of the broad range of materials constituting cultural heritage artifacts. The first two chapters introduce the need for conserving heritage materials and the methodologies involved. Analytical techniques required for the determination of chemical composition and elucidation of material microstructure are also described. The main conservation treatments (cleaning, desalination, consolidation, and disinfestation) are reviewed in the light of well-established conservation principles. The latter dictate that during conservation treatment, the integrity of heritage materials should be respected at all times. This is achieved by keeping intervention to a minimum and ensuring reversibility of the treatment prior to application.
