● Ethanoic acid to propanoic acid -

# Step I -
Ethanoic acid is reduced to ethanol by LiAlH4.
CH3COOH + 4[H] --> CH3CH2OH + H2O

# Step II -
Ethanol is first treated with KCN to form ethyl cyanide.
CH3CH2OH + KCN --> CH3CH2CN + KOH

# Step III -
Ethyl cyanide is then treated with water to form propanoic acid.
CH3CH2CN + 2H2O --> CH3CH2COOH + NH3
