Ethyne is converted to acetaldehyde by hydration of ethyne.Acetylene easily combines with water in the presence of sulphuric acid & mercuric sulphate salts to form vinyl alcohol which tautomerizes to acetaldehyde. This reaction is called as Kucherov's reaction.

Answer: The conversion is given below.

Explanation:

When ethyne is treated with water in the presence of an acid and mercury salts, it leads to the production of carbonyl compound which is acetaldehyde.

Mercury ion acts as a catalyst in hydration reactions. The addition of water follows Markovnikov's rule and it leads to the formation of more stable carbocation.

The chemical reaction for the conversion of ethyne to acetaldehyde is given in the image attached below.
