Conversion of phenol to acetophenone

Explanation:

Phenol

Its molecular formula is C₆H₅OH

Acetophenone

Its molecular formula is C₆H₅COCH₃

Phenol can be converted into acetophenone by  reducing  benzene by the action of zinc dust and also heating it .

It is called as Friedel Crafts acylation  .

This occurs in presence of acetyl chloride and in  presence of anhydrous AlCl₃ yeilds acetophenone.

The reaction is :

C₆H₅OH + Zn ------> C₆H₆

                       heat

C₆H₆ + CH₃COCl ------>C₆H₅COCH₃

                      In presence of AlCl₃
