How to determine the group and period of an element using atomic number configuration?

1. the number of shells we determine the period number .

2. the number of Valence Electrons will determine the group number by is the valence electrons are more than to recharge 3 , 4 , 5 .... then we need to add 10 to it . Therefore group no. of Carbon , Nitrogen ...... is 13 ( 3 + 10 ) , 14 (4+10) ......

Firstly convert atomic number in the terms of Electronic Configuration

then the last set of electronic configuration contains the number of valence electron of the atom and total number of sets contains the number of shells in an atom hence number of valence electron determine the group of the elements and total number of shells determines the period of the element.
