Prepositions do the work of establishing or indicating relationships between other words in a sentence.
For example - The jug was kept on the table... (here 'on' indicates a relation between the jug and the table)
Prepositions can indicate direction...time...location...and...spatial relationships, as well as other abstract types of relationships also.
BUT
It must be very clear that there’s no any declared or established formula for ascertaining which preposition to use with a particular combination of words.
You can learn the use of prepositions in a sentence with the different combination of words by attentively reading as much English content as you can with focus on the use of prepositions.
Just think ,if you are able to use any prepositions correctly is just because you have whether heard them or seen them in sentences with all awareness of their usses.
For Example - it is not difficult for you to fill in the following blank .
She was going ____ school.
You will very easily fill 'to' in the blank. In the same way, you will be able to use many other prepositions by going through English content, written or spoken.
