Your problem is the same as most people. You try to memorize facts instead of understanding concepts. most people are great at memorizing things but poor at understanding them. They seem well educated because they can cite all these things other people thought up, but they usually can’t explain them because they don’t understand them. Many concepts are hard to understand so the number you can understand will be different than other people. I never memorized anything in science with rare exceptions where the concepts were as my professor admitted to me when I tried to understand them “convenient explanations that seem to fit the data but there is no evidence that it was actually true”. You need to read about science with the idea that you will not accept anything unless you understand how it works. Once you understand it you don’t need to memorize anything. Most people just memorize what other people said about science. They never understand much of it, so they can’t understand it when you explain things. They just compare it to what they memorized and decide you are wrong.
Unfortunately science itself is constantly evolving. What you are taught may already be on the way out and will be replaced by newer theories that exist now and won’t be accepted until enough of the most influential scientists that made their reputations on theories that are destined to be replaced as new evidence shows they need to be either modified or replaced. These scientists always try to fit the new evidence to their theory rather than fit a better theory to all the evidence. Because of this you should always be skeptical of existing theory, especially when there is evidence it doesn’t fit. The scientists that ultimately come up with the new theories often came to derive them because they thought the theories destined to be replaced didn’t add up and sought out to understand things better
