Answer:

The ‘health and activity card’ format released by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has attracted criticism from school heads, owing to its complicated process.

The CBSE has devised a format of ‘health and activity card’ for keeping the record of all activities of Health and Physical Education (HPE). It has been made mandatory for the schools to upload a report of work accomplished across the strands of HPE in a prescribed manner, for enabling students of Class X and XII to appear in the board exam.

Vandana Shahi, Principal of BCM School Basant Avenue, said: “There are so many kinds of tests, and it is a bit complicated process. It requires an assessment of every child for health record maintenance. It is too complicated to start with, but if we are able to do it, there is nothing like it. The health education is indispensable for students, considering the sedentary lifestyle they are leading. We are still to chart out ways to execute it. We might need professionals.”

Jaswinder Sidhu, Principal of DAV School, said: “There is no clarity of instructions as to whether the assessment of each and every child needs to be done or not. There will be so many students in each section from Class IX to XII. Maintaining a record of every child will be time consuming. The process shouldn’t have been linked with the board registration. No work can be performed efficiently under pressure. Moreover, why should we be uploading personal details of a child on the website without parents’ consent? So many areas have been given by the CBSE right from eye check-up, dental check-up to what not. We are teachers, not doctors who can perform health check-ups on students. The circular should be given second thought.”

Earlier, schools were advised to reserve one period every day for Health and Physical Education (HPE), especially for Class IX to XII from session 2018-19 onwards.

For tracking health and activity record, various fitness parameters related to health and fitness component had been mentioned. Each parameter has a corresponding test. There are 11 kinds of test that will be performed on a student for maintaining the record, including BMI, Partial Curl up etc.

The health component will include body composition, muscular strength, flexibility, endurance and balance. Parameters for skill components will include agility, speed, power and coordination.

Other parameters include vision, ears, teeth occlusion, general body measurements, circumference, pulse, blood pressure and posture evaluation. The details regarding how to conduct test have been mentioned on the CBSE website.
