Many organic compounds have chemically reactive functional groups. Some examples are carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl, alkane, alkene groups. These groups are attached to the compound through C - C bonds. The first Carbon attached to the Carbon in the functional group is the Alpha Carbon. The next one in the chain is the Beta Carbon. The next one is called the Gamma Carbon.
