To find length in a topography map you need to have the following materials:

1) A string

2) A scale

First read the question so that you know from where to where you have to find the distance.

Lets take Andra to Mohabbatgarh in grid squares 1615 and 1717 respectively.

Take a points from metalled road on string to the end of metalled road  till Mohabbatgarh .

Now the scale referred on map is 2cm = 1 km

Now if the distance is 10cm on the map then lets take it as

2 cm = 1 km                       (i)

10 cm = x km                    (ii)

Cross multiplying (i) and (ii)

Then

2x km = 10cm

x km = 10 ÷ 2 c m

x km = 5

Therefore the distance between Andra AND Mohabbatgarh is 5 km.

Additional Information:

I want to find the distance of a temple whose four figure grid is 1107.

Now for more precision I will find the six figure grid.

First of all you need to have a scale  for this.

From the vertical line measure the the distance horizontally on the top of the temple.

Now From the horizontal line measure the distance vertically towards the top of the temple.

The first reading will be 1 according to me so 1/2 of 1 which in geography we consider as 0.

Now this zero will be placed in the highlighted position 11007.

Now the second reading will be 6 according to me so half of 6 is 3

So the 3 will come at the last  that is 110073.

So now this is a six - figure grid and the new numbers are highlighted.
