for example if you want to find the e.c.of aluminium ,just see the atomic number i.e. 13....now the first shell would contain 2 electrons ,next shell would contain 8 which are fixed but you have to fill 3 in last shell because the two are fixed but the third one is the remaining electrons to complete the atomic number....
