H.C.F.= HIGHEST COMMON FACTOR

FOR EXAMPLE
LETS TAKE 10 AND 6
10= 2*5
6=2*3

HCF = 2

HCF means Highest Common Factor

Just like you do LCM but the difference is we take only common factors

for example HCF of 45 and 75

factors of 45 = 5 x 3 x 3

Factors of 5 x 5 x 3

So hCF is 5 x 3= 15 because 5 ans 3 are only common factors here  for both 45 and 75

5 l   45,    75

3 l      9,    15

          3,     5

Here you can see 5 and 3 can divide both numbers. so 5 x 3 = 15

Now look for 30 and 40

30 = 2 x 3 x 5

40 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 5

here one 2 and one 5 are common so 2 x 5 = 10 is the HCF

2  l  30,  40

5  l   15,   20

          3,     4

Here 2 and 5 can only divide both 30 and 40. so HCF = 10

cuteipie82: great explanation
