BMI or Body Mass Index is a renowned, scientific method of measurement of obesity. This procedure for measurement of obesity is preferred by WHO (World Health Organization), it is a normally an index of weight- for- height. The classification that is used in Body Mass Index is underweight, normal, overweight and obese.
For calculating BMI a simple formula is used that is by dividing the weight in KG by the square of an individual’s height in meters. The classification of Underweight, Normal Overweight and Obese according to BMI is given below. If your BMI is less than 18.5 than you will fall in the category of underweight. From 18.5 to 22.9 is the normal weight range. BMI of 23 and above come in overweight category. It has further classification of overweight people namely pre obese (25-29.9), obese class I (30 – 34.9) , obese class II (35 – 39.9), and obese class III (more than 40).
