here is ur answer buddy

Oxygen lies in group 16 and thus has avalency of -2. Nitrogen lies in the group 15 and has a charge of +5 forming the bond with three oxygen atoms. So if you add thevalency of all the atoms, you get the answer as -1. Nitrate ion (NO3) has one Nitrogen and three Oxygen atoms.

hope it helps

Valency of (-NO3) is (-1), because last electronic configuration of N is 2s2 2p3 means outer orbit contains 5e- where as oxygen contains 6e- in last orbit but oxygen has more electronegative hence electron pull by oxygen. N has two option either get 3e- or loose 5e- to complete it's octet where oxygen has chance to gain 2e- or loose 6e- to complete octet. Now check possibilities which has more possibility of O and N to complete octet. As we know oxygen has more electronegative hence possibility is to pull e- from N that mean 5e- given by N to O but all 3 oxygen require 6e- to complete octet but N can give only 5e- hence N 5e- are compensate with 5e- oxygen but one negative is left which is -1 charge. Hence NO3 has 1 negative charge….I hope you get your answer
