The concept of an equivalent exists in chemistry. The equivalent of a substance, or as it is also called, the equivalent quantity of a substance, means the quantity of a substance which interacts with one mole of hydrogen. Equivalent masses may be required for correct calculations in a chemical reaction between substances. The advantage is that we can obtain a correct value without long formulas of chemical reactions, because we only have to know that the chemical substances interact together, or that the substance is the product of a chemical reaction.
