see user :-
group :- the number of valence electrons tell u the grp number.
period :-the no of shells tell the period of an element.
just refer to the attachment for the example....
HOPE THIS ANSWER HELPS....

princesspranjal24: see gogul : when we go down in metals the reactivity increases bcoz the size of an atom increases due to increase in atomic number with the result shells increases so nuclear pull starts decreasing as the shells moves far and we know that as metals hav the tendency to donate electrons, it becomes easier for them to do so as the nuclear pulls has decreased.... while it is opposite in case of non metals
princesspranjal24: in metals as we go down in a grp the properties of metals remain same since they all have same valence electron...and we already know that valence electron decides the properties of an element
princesspranjal24: I hope this helps....
gogulmm007gmailcom: thanks can i know which standard you are studying
princesspranjal24: I m in 9 th....
princesspranjal24: and u
gogulmm007gmailcom: 10 then how do you know about this
princesspranjal24: Arre actually I'm in ICSE BOARD and very recently I hav done this chapter and given the test in school

\small\bold{Answer:}

The number of shells in the electronic configuration of the given element determine it's period i.e. if there are 3 shells in an atom then it will belong to period 3.

The number of valence electrons in the atom determines the group number of that atom i.e. if an element has 4 valence electrons then it must belong to group IV A.

Let us take an example:

Element: Sodium
Symbol: Na
Electronic Configuration: 2, 8, 1

Since sodium has 3 shells, it belongs to period 3. Also, we notice that this element has 1 electron in its outermost orbit therefore it belongs to group I A.

Hence, Sodium is present in group IA of period 3 in the modern periodic table.
