A pair of elements could be having the same group by similarity in their number of valence electron present in the outermost shell.

(i) and (iv) belong to the same period as the number of shells they possess are similar in number.

sreeya2002: How to find the similaritie in the valence electrons?
maloorajrishi: Electronic configuration for eg. Be( 2.2) and Mg (2.8.2) they have 2 electrons in the outermost shells, they're called valence electrons. However, its easier to find the similarities in valence electrons of elements depending on the group they represent. In essence, group 2 represents all the elements having 2 electrons in their outermost shells. ^^
