Answer:

if an atom has 1,2,3 and 4 electrons in its outermost shell,

then , its valency is 1,2,3 an 4 respectively.

if an atom has 5,6,7,8 electrons in its outermost shell ,

then, its valency is 8  -5 = 3 , 8 - 6 = 2 ,8 - 7 = 1 and 8 - 8 = 0.

Example,
