To find the valency of an atom, you first need to know the atomic number of the element.After that arrange the atomic number in the order of 2, 8, 8 ,18 till how much is the atomic number and the final number which you obtain in that order is the valency of element.
Example- Sodium- atomic number is 11 and now by following the above pattern we get 2, 8, 1 hence the last number 1 denotes the valency of the element
