how to find valency for given if they gave atomic number.pls need it with clear explanation

i can try to explain.... let we take example. suppose... we have atomic no. 8. nd we have to find valency. first shell will contain 2 then next shell will contain 8 nd this series will go long... now., we have given 8. its eloctronic distributuion will be 2,6 as we add these two no. s we will get 8. now last shell contain 6 so its valency will be 6
