How to find valency of elements from electronic configuration?

To find valency , go through my example suppose u have to find valeny of oxygen so,

O8-2,6-Can be written as configuration
then See the electrons of outermost shell it's 6 and by some rules it is proved that of electrons in outermost shell is more than 4 then it is minused by 8
so 8-6(electrons of outermost shell)
-2 Is valency of Oxygen
