We can identify the nature of a compound by their properties.

Acids have the following properties -

i) Turns blue litmus to red

ii) Sour in taste

iii) Release H+ ion in water

iv) pH is less than 7

v) Acids do not change the colour of turmeric paper (a indicator)

vi) Acids do not show any colour change with phenolphthalein.

Bases have the following properties -

i) Turns red litmus to blue

ii) Bitter in taste

iii) Release OH- ion in water

iv) pH is more than 7

v) Bases change the colour turmeric paper from yellow to red

vi) A drop of phenolphthalein when added to basic solution changes the colour of the solution to pink.
