If you love physics, I think you should just pursue that!

Try for CMI or IISERs. Try for St.Stephen's College.

For St.Stephen's College in particular, the top 1 to 3 people go on to study physics at Cambridge University! 3-5 people go on to do masters at 'ecole polytechnique' in France, Erasmus Mundus scholarship is gettable if you have good acads, and almost everyone else manages a masters from IITs or JNU. Almost everyone does their PhD from top universities abroad or from IISc.

But the red herring is that as you get into your sophomore year, a lot of pure math will be at play. So you should focus on courses like real analysis, linear algebra, differential equations etc right from day 1. Being good at QFT requires real hard work and being very comfortable with math is absolutely necessary.

So at Delhi University you could do really well in academia if you score 70% or more and always keep testing yourself.
You can learn a lot from your peers at great institutions and the faculty would help you as well if you do show potential.

All the best.
