Anions and cations are formed when a metal loses electrons, and a nonmetal gains those electrons. The electrostatic attraction between the positive and negative bring all the particles together and creates an ionic compound which is called sodium chloride.

If you see sodium chloride formed in a solution then you can say that the solution consists of cations and anions.
