Answer:

The simplest way to identify saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons is to look at their bonds. If there is single bond then it will be a saturated hydrocarbon. If there is a triple or a double bond then it will be consider as unsaturated hydrocarbon.

Saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons

Explanation:

Hydrocarbons are the compounds which contain carbon and hydrogen atoms only.

  • Hydrocarbons can be classified in to two types, namely saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons based on the nature of bonding in between carbon atoms.
  • A saturated hydrocarbon is one that contain only single bonds in between the carbon atoms.
  • Example: Alkanes
  • Methane(CH_4), Ethane(H_3C-CH_3), Propane(H_3C-CH_2-CH_3) etc.
  • An unsaturated compound is one that contain double or triple bonds in between the carbon atoms.
  • Example: Alkenes and Alkynes
  • Ethene(H_2C=CH_2), Propene(CH_3-CH=CH_2), Ethyne(HC≡CH), Propyne (CH₃-C≡CH)
