Saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons
Explanation:
Hydrocarbons are the compounds which contain carbon and hydrogen atoms only.
- Hydrocarbons can be classified in to two types, namely saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons based on the nature of bonding in between carbon atoms.
- A saturated hydrocarbon is one that contain only single bonds in between the carbon atoms.
- Example: Alkanes
- Methane, Ethane, Propane etc.
- An unsaturated compound is one that contain double or triple bonds in between the carbon atoms.
- Example: Alkenes and Alkynes
- Ethene, Propene, Ethyne(HC≡CH), Propyne (CH₃-C≡CH)
