The group number and period number depends on the valence shell electrons and number of shells respectively.

Electronic configuration of sulphur is 2,8,6

If the valence shell electrons are 1 or 2, group number is 1 and 2 respectively.

But if valence shell electrons are more than two, the group number is 10+number of valence shell electrons.

Sulphur has 6 electrons in its valence shell. So group number of sulphur is 10+6=16.

Period number depends on the number of shells and element has.

Sulphur has 3 shells, so period number of sulphur is 3.
