To know whether a number is a perfect square or not, we have to find the square root of that number.

If the square root comes in decimal place then the number is not a perfect square, if not, then the number is a perfect square.

Let's consider some examples,

1. 36

The square root of 36
     ⇒ 6

6 is not a decimal number hence, 36 is a perfect square

2. 40

The square root of 40
   ⇒ 6.324

6.324 is a decimal place, hence, 40 is not a perfect square.

I HOPE IT HELPS.

i) If the units place of a square number is 2, 3, 7 or 8, they are not perfect squares.

ii) The number of pairs that you can make in the square number, those many digits will be there in the square root of the number.

iii) Number whose digit sum is 2, 3, 5, 6 or 8 are not perfect squares.
