a sewing needle a magnet (preferably a 'bar' magnet, though a refrigerator magnet will do)wax paper cut into a circle, or a quarter-inch-thick slice of cork, or any similar light material that can be pierceda pie pan or bowl water start by filling the pan or bowl with water. Don't pour in so much water that it's about to overflow, but make the levels deep enough to allow for a floating needle.Run the magnet along the sewing needle about five dozen times. Make sure you always rub the magnet in the same direction, starting at one end and moving to the other?but not back again. Think of it like petting a cat, head to tail. We recommend moving from the eye of the needle to the point to minimize the risk of an accidental jab.Take your newly magnetized needle and push it through the circle of cork,७ or thread it through the wax paper. The end goal is to create a circle with a bit of metal sticking out on either side.Float the circle in the water, as close to the center as possible. If you've done everything correctly, the needle on your homemade compass should cause the cork or paper to rotate until it settles in line with the globe's magnetic field. The visible ends of the needle will be pointing to the north and south.

-take a bar magnet .
-binds the magnet with a thread or string.
-hang it (bar magnet)
-left it free for some time.
-you observe that the north ploe of the magnet is face towards geographical north and south pole of magnet facing geographical south.
