If you want to make an electromagnet, you'll need a source of electricity, a conductor, and metal. Wrap insulated copper wire tightly around an iron screw or nail before connecting the wire to a battery, and watch as your new electromagnet picks up small metal objects.

A coil of wire wound around a magnetic core, which acts as a magnet as long as an electric current flows through the coil is called an electromagnet
To make an electromagnet
Long iron nail, dry cell, switch, copper wire, steel pins
- Wind a length of insulated copper wire around a long iron nail.
- Connect the ends of the wire to a dry cell, through a switch.
- Close the circuit and bring steel pins near the nail What do you observe?
- Open the circuit and see what happens.
The pins are attracted to the nail when the circuit is closed. When the circuit is opened, the pins fall off. This shows that the iron nail becomes an electromagnet when current is flowing through the wire and loses its magnetic ability when the flow of current through the circuit is interrupted.
